Hobi was born from the wish of people who grew up in Bixiga — us — to have more people get to know our neighborhood, its characters, and experience a São Paulo different from the one usually seen. We first tried to open right here, but it didn't work out, so we opened in Campo Belo instead — a plan B that kept the name alive: HOBI, from HOstel BIxiga, a living reminder of what we always wanted to be. In 2023, we heard that this very mansion, in our own neighborhood, was for sale. It needed a lot of restoration, of course. We embraced the idea, and today we're exactly where we always wanted to be: not just in our neighborhood, but among our own people.

This house is a survivor. We traced the original blueprints back to 1896 and found nothing — the construction method it uses, with wood framing, disappears from official records after 1902, which suggests it's even older than that. We honestly still don't know the exact date: it was a guest architect from France who noticed that the door panels and staircase design are identical to those of another heritage-listed mansion in Sao Paulo, dated 1895 — a clue that only came to light because he came back after visiting that other place to tell us. That's how this investigation moves forward: little by little, with the people who pass through here.What we do know for certain is who lived inside it. The house passed through several hands over more than a century, until it reached the family of Dona Elza — a local visual artist — who kept it alive, literally paying the bills by renting out rooms, one by one, until 2022. She was the last owner before us: it was only in 2023, when her children decided to sell, that the house became Hobi.

Hobi is, literally, a family affair — and since everyone who stays here ends up asking about us in person, it makes sense to introduce you to who you'll meet.I'm Ricardo: I came up with the idea for Hobi, designed the restoration project for the house, researched its history the way you saw above, and to this day I hand-sew the bed linens you'll use in your room. I was born right here in Bixiga, very close to this house, and I love showing the neighborhood from the perspective of someone who's actually from here.Tiago and Ana, siblings, run the night reception, and you'll be very well received. For us, hiring well and paying fairly for the work each person does is part of what Hobi wants to be — there are no volunteers here, everyone is properly paid for what they do.Breakfast is made every day by Welligton, my stepfather — a man who cooks like few others. It's a simple breakfast, in the style of Brazilian homes, but made with a lot of care, and guest comments confirm it. Since he mainly speaks Portuguese, check-in is organized to start after he leaves, which gives more time and ease to guests who don't yet speak the language.And Bruno leads guest services — a tourism graduate, he's the one behind those great recommendations you see in the reviews, always prioritizing that you make the most of the city and, whenever possible, spend little: free museum days, the free Sunday buses in Sao Paulo, and bars, nightlife and cultural activities right in the neighborhood that mostly cost nothing.And every review you leave on Google or Booking, we answer personally — because for us, every guest who stays here isn't a number: it's someone we genuinely wanted to have met.

The few below 5 stars are 2 to 4 years old, from before the hostel's current phase in Bixiga. And it's worth remembering: most of the neighboring hostels and hotels have been open for a decade or more, while we've been in this house for less than a year — and we've already reached this number.
